I don’t really like apple pie, but I love this recipe for apple crisp. It’s basically apple pie without the crust!

Why should you try this? It’s really easy to throw together, tastes amazing, and is low in calories!

This really does taste just like apple pie. And you don’t have to feel guilty for eating the whole pan because 1 serving is just 175 calories!

Let’s get into it.

Cooking time - 30-35 minutes

Cooling time - 5+ minutes

Ready in an hour!

Equipment list:

  • Apple corer OR utility knife

  • Utility/paring knife

  • Peeler

  • Serving spoon

  • 13 x 9 baking dish

  • 1/3 cup measuring cup

  • 1/4 cup measuring cup (or use 1/2 of 1/2 cup)

  • Teaspoon

  • 1/2 teaspoon (or use 1/2 of 1 teaspoon)

  • Tablespoon

  • Mixing bowl

  • Cutting board

Ingredients:

Main ingredients:

  • 3 pounds granny smith and/or golden delicious apples, cored, peeled and cut into 1-inch wedges (about 5-6 medium-sized apples)

  • 1 medium-sized lemon or 2 smaller lemons, with 1/2 teaspoon zest and 2 tablespoons lemon juice

  • 1/3 cup brown sugar

  • 2 tablespoons flour

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Crisp ingredients:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats, uncooked

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1/3 cup flour

  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened to room temperature

Steps to get your apple crisp:

  1. Gather all your equipment and ingredients. Peel, core, and cut the apples. Zest and juice the lemon. Make sure your butter is out to get soft. Preheat the oven to 425F.

    • TIP: Don’t worry about getting the apple slices super thin. Make them the thickness you’re comfortable with.

    • TIP 2: Feel free to use a mix of granny smith and golden delicious apples. I’ve even thrown in a few fuji apples or other types I’ve had on hand. The main thing is that you have more granny smith apples in the mix!

  2. Toss into the baking dish the lemon zest and juice, the apple slices, 1/3 cup brown sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Mix around with your hands or a spatula until all apples are evenly coated.

  3. In a bowl, mix 1 cup old-fashioned oats, 1/4 cup brown sugar, and 1/3 cup flour. Then work 4 tablespoons of softened butter into the mixture with your fingers.

    • TIP: You want the mix to be coarse with no chunks of butter.

  4. Spread the oat mix evenly over the top of the apples. You should have just enough to cover the whole pan.

  5. Bake at 425F for 30-35 minutes until the mix is nicely browned on top and the juices are bubbling around the edges.

  6. Serve warm or cool with ice cream or whipped cream (bonus points if you make your own whipped cream, it’s super easy and very tasty). You’ll be amazed at how much this tastes like apple pie!
